(KNSI) – For most Minnesota hunters, the opportunity to take an elk remains a dream, but this year, four lucky residents will see that dream come true.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has announced its annual elk hunting lottery, offering just four licenses for the 2025 season. It’s a significant reduction from the ten permits available last year, making this year’s opportunity even more coveted among the state’s hunting community.

The application process is straightforward but competitive. Hunters have until July 3rd to throw their hat in the ring, with a modest $5 non-refundable application fee required upfront. Those fortunate enough to have their number called will then need to purchase the actual hunting license for $288.

The DNR says there are three recognized herds in northwest Minnesota that roam between Kittson and Marshall County and Manitoba, Canada. Only elk from the Caribou-Vita herd will be hunted this season.

Successful applicants who choose not to purchase a permit will be eligible for future elk hunts and receive an application point toward their 10-year application history preference.

The DNR has structured the season into two distinct periods in Zone 30. The first two licenses cover the A season, running from Saturday, September 13th through Sunday, September 21st. The remaining two permits are designated for the B season, which extends from Saturday, September 27th through Sunday, October 5th. Both seasons allow hunters to harvest either a bull or cow elk.

Hunters must select one of the seasons and can apply individually or in parties of two at any license agent, online or by telephone at 888-665-4236.
