(KNSI) — The man who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following an encounter with police Monday night was a former Minnesota State Trooper.

A newspaper article posted in 1999 says Larry Alstead retired after a 32-year career as a patrolman. Alstead joined the U.S. Navy and worked in the iron industry while he waited to be accepted into the academy. His first post was in Ortonville in western Minnesota before transferring to Kandiyohi County and being stationed in Paynesville. His territory also covered Stearns County around Brooten, Lake Henry and Richmond.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension’s preliminary report says officers responded to Alstead’s home around 9:00 p.m. after his wife said he had assaulted her and then barricaded himself in the basement. She also warned police that he had a gun with him. When officers attempted to make an arrest, an armed Alstead appeared at the bottom of the basement stairs. An officer discharged their weapon twice before Alstead fatally shot himself.

The investigation is ongoing.
