(KNSI) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a fatal officer involved shooting in Paynesville.
According to Paynesville Police Chief Paul Wegner, police from his agency, the Cold Spring Police Department and deputies from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department responded just after 9:00 p.m. Monday to a house on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue for a domestic dispute. They learned the man involved had a gun and worked to get the woman out of the house safely. She told investigators he had assaulted her and had injuries to both her head and neck.
A press release says the man locked himself inside the basement, so officers went in to make contact with him and get him out of the basement. He was told he was under arrest, and as officers were trying to take him into custody for domestic assault, shots were fired.
Life saving measures were taken immediately; however, the man was pronounced dead. A gun was recovered from the scene.
Body worn cameras were in use at the time.
