(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Police Department is warning the public about increased vehicle thefts and attempted thefts across the city.

A press release says thieves are specifically targeting Hyundai and Kia brands. Theft of those vehicles has been widely publicized around the country, however, St. Cloud has seemed to be rather insulated from that trend up until recently. There have been more than 30 documented incidents where a vehicle has been stolen or there was an attempt. Many have been linked to a vulnerability within the ignition systems, allowing them to be started without a key.

Police say the suspects have primarily been juvenile males, and according to investigators, the thefts are widespread, affecting different neighborhoods so the thieves can go on a joy ride. There has been little evidence showing they’re being stolen and then sold.

Authorities say they want to make the pubic aware of the alarming trend so they can take steps to protect their vehicles. The release says manufacturers are aware of the thefts and have released software upgrades and deterrents for certain models. Police suggest contacting the local dealerships to see if a vehicle qualifies. Steering wheel locks can also prevent theft as it is a strong visual deterrent and an added layer of security.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts, contact St. Cloud police at 320-251-1200 or TriCounty Crime Stoppers at 1-800-255-1301. They also have a website. Find it by clicking here. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
