(KNSI) – Over 99% of Stearns County and all of Benton County are still abnormally dry, but future reports will likely show this week’s drenching rain has helped.

In the tri-county area, Sherburne is in the best shape. As of 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, nearly 21% was abnormally dry, with the rest seeing normal soil moisture. St. Cloud Regional Airport recorded over an inch of rain since readings were taken, and both grass and trees appear to be lush with vibrant green foliage.

Statewide, over half of Minnesota is abnormally dry, with about 18% in moderate drought, the first stage of the four-part scale used by the United States Drought Monitor. The area affected the most is the headwaters of the Mississippi River stretching towards the Fargo/Moorhead area.

The zone in the best shape starts at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro heads southeast to Winona. Over 30,000 acres burned in St. Louis and Lake Counties, even though they are only abnormally dry, which serves as a reminder that caution is always needed.
