(KNSI) – With roughly two inches of rain falling in the St. Cloud area this week, area fields are waterlogged, and organizers have to adjust high school sports schedules on the fly.
Sections for girls’ softball were postponed on Tuesday, and, in some cases, the venues will need to be changed for the early rounds. In Section 6AA, top-seeded Cathedral began its playoff run Monday with a 15-0 win over Milaca. The second round will now happen on Thursday at the College of St. Benedict.
Should Cathedral get past #8 Holdingford in the morning, they would play the winner of #4 Pierz and #5 Paynesville at 1:15 p.m. The other side of the bracket plays in the afternoon and evening at CSB, a newer facility with fieldturf and quick drainage. The rest of the section is double elimination, so the losers on Thursday would play at Rivers Edge Park on Friday, the original venue.
Semifinals and finals will still be at Rivers Edge Park, with one round scheduled for Tuesday and the championship on Thursday. The title round could be a true doubleheader if needed.
The opening round of Section 8AAA has been moved to Thursday, with the second round on Friday. #1 ROCORI is the only team in that section with an automatic bye to Friday’s games. It is double elimination, with the consolation bracket kicking off Friday.
In 8AAAA, it is a similar situation. A play-in game winnowed the field to eight on Monday. The opener for the rest of the teams was pushed from Tuesday to Thursday. Games are played at the high seed. Sartell and the St. Cloud Crush will host contests starting at 4:30 p.m. Third-round games will be played on Friday.
