(KNSI) – Anglers enjoying Minnesota’s waters can keep bass starting this weekend.

The bass fishing catch-and-keep season opens Saturday across the Land of 10,000 Lakes. According to the Department of Natural Resources, spring is a great time to cast a line for largemouth and smallmouth bass, which both have a reputation as fun to catch fighters. The species are typically easier to catch early in the year when they spend more time in shallow water. Anglers can keep a total of six combined bass.

The DNR says that as the water warms, many bass move to deeper water in search of sunken points, rocky humps and weed edges that offer protection from larger fish and hiding places for prey.
