(KNSI) – Flags will fly at half-staff in Minnesota in honor of officers recently killed or hurt in the line of duty.

Governor Tim Walz has ordered all United States and Minnesota flags lowered at state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Thursday. Walz has proclaimed May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 11th through the 17th as Police Week in Minnesota.

Earlier this week, Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell and Burnsville Police Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge’s names were added to the National Police Memorial for Fallen Officers and read out loud as part of a candelight vigil on Tuesday night. Elmstrand and Ruge were killed during an armed standoff in February 2024 while responding to a domestic call. Mitchell died in May of 2024 after responding to a shooting call. He attempted to aid a man he believed was a victim, who then ambushed and fatally shot him.

“Today we honor the peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our communities, and we thank the 10,000 Minnesota officers who serve in over 400 law enforcement agencies across the state,” said Governor Walz. “Peace officers exemplify resilience, courage, and bravery, and we lower our flags in recognition of their unwavering dedication and sacrifice.”

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are also encouraged to lower their flags.
