(KNSI) – Most of Minnesota, including Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns Counties, will again be covered by a red flag warning on Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued the alert from noon to 9:00 p.m. It warns that the combination of south to southwest winds at 15 mph sustained, and gusting as high as 30, plus warm temperatures and humidity at just 15 percent, will cause any fires that develop to spread rapidly.
The office stresses that outdoor burning is not recommended. A red flag warning indicates critical fire conditions exist that could lead to natural disasters threatening property and people.
The warning covers just Monday, but officials have already said Tuesday may present similar problems. The dangers are not just for rural areas. The St. Cloud Fire Department says an unattended campfire led to an incident on Saturday night.
Just after 9:30, the SCFD was called out to a home in the 200 block of 35th Avenue North as flames were quickly spreading to a camper and two detached garages on the property. The camper was fully engulfed when crews arrived, and there are visible signs of damage on the other buildings.
SCFD was able to contain the blaze by quickly rolling out several hose lines and attacking the fire in a coordinated way. The fire brought down power lines. Those were secured and made safe.
