(KNSI) – Just two weeks ago, the parents of a Storm n’ Sabres JV lacrosse player were unsure if he would ever wake up again after an accident at practice. On Tuesday, he was talking in his room at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Blake Sundby collapsed after getting hit in the back of the head with a lacrosse ball last month. He had a helmet on at the time. Blake’s mother has been providing updates on the site CaringBridge. She mentioned last week his doctors found that Blake had an undiagnosed aneurysm. It ruptured from the contact.
On Tuesday, doctors ended Blake’s sedation, and at 9:30, he was awake and had his breathing tube removed. He used an oxygen mask for another five minutes before taking over on his own. The update says Blake was as talkative as his voice would allow for.
After having been intubated for weeks, his throat was extremely hoarse, and Blake is not allowed to swallow water yet. His mom also reports that Blake is ready to get the feeding tube removed from his nose as soon as possible. There is still a lot of physical therapy and mental therapy to come due to the significant trauma Blake endured, but his mom says Tuesday was a miracle.
Area fundraisers continue to help the family with medical expenses, transportation, and lodging costs as he gets care an hour away. The Sartell Youth Hockey Association is holding a Bags for Blake tournament at Second Street Coffeehouse from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. Free-will donations will be collected at the door.
