(KNSI) – Area bus drivers will get back in the saddle for the 2025 Metro Bus Roadeo in two weeks.
According to a press release, they will compete in two categories, determined by the size of the bus. Fixed Routes are the city buses you see moving from stop to stop around town. The Dial-a-Ride division is for the smaller vehicles.
Drivers must navigate a timed obstacle course made of orange road cones, complete an acceleration requirement, and pass other tests that mimic real-life driving scenarios. Competitors are scored based on avoiding cones, minimizing stops and starts, maintaining optimal distance from obstacles, and more.
The roundup is scheduled for Thursday, May 15th, at the K-Lot on the St. Cloud State University campus, located next to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on the southern end of campus. Metro Bus has been holding the event since 1986.
According to officials, the area has a rich history of success. Metro Bus drivers have won the Minnesota State Roadeo 26 times, placed in the top four globally eight times and won the world event twice.
Winners advance to the state and potentially international competitions.
