(KNSI) – A provision to the liquor bill championed by Senator Aric Putnam of the St. Cloud area breezed through the state’s upper chamber Monday, 53-12.

It would allow cities to create social districts where possessing alcohol outdoors would be legal, and the drinks could be carried between venues. It follows a two-year trial balloon in Anoka, which was the first ever authorized by the state legislature. Later on, an amendment allowed the social district concept to spread to Shakopee and Stillwater.

Senator Putnam is hoping to see area cities take advantage soon. “This bill gives other towns, like St. Cloud and St. Joseph, the same shot to create spaces where neighbors and visitors alike want to gather, connect, and enjoy what makes their community special.”

By allowing more relaxed regulations in social districts, cities can concentrate nightlife more closely together and better regulate it. A broad coalition of businesses and economic development organizations supported the bill. The social district concept has already been adopted in other Midwest states.

The provision has yet to pass the state House.
