(KNSI) – The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued a Tornado Warning for northeastern Meeker County, southeastern Stearns County, and northwestern Wright County in central Minnesota. The warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m. According to the NWS, at 3:39 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located about 6 miles north of Litchfield, moving northeast at 50 mph. Radar has indicated rotation within the storm. The primary hazards include a potential tornado and half-dollar-sized hail.
Residents in the area should take immediate precautions. Flying debris will be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter, and significant damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, windows, and vehicles. Tree damage is also expected.
Areas that could be impacted include St. Cloud, Litchfield, Waite Park, Rockville, Clearwater, Watkins, Kimball, Forest City, Luxemburg, South Haven, St. Nicholas, Fairhaven, Pleasant Lake, St. Augusta, and the Litchfield Airport.
If you are in the warned area, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. Those outdoors, in mobile homes, or in vehicles should seek the nearest substantial shelter immediately and protect themselves from flying debris.
