(KNSI) – Movies and music make up the Paramount Center for the Arts summer schedule.

It begins on June 16th with Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. The original Indy adventure grips viewers from beginning to end with dramatic action set pieces like the boulder escape, asp-filled Egyptian tombs, and the opening of the Ark of the Covenant. Tickets are $5.

The Summer Movie Series leaves the Sahara and moves to the ocean on Tuesday, July 22nd, with a showing of the animated film Moana. She has a great life on a secluded Pacific island, but yearns for more. Along with demi-God Maui, Moana becomes a wayfinder and saves her peaceful society. The 1995 hit Jumanji rounds out the daring trio of films on August 14th. A seemingly innocuous board game brings the danger of the jungle into the living room of suburban kids bored with vacation.

There will also be plenty of concerts during what is generally considered the offseason for the venue. With warm sunshine outdoors, getting audiences to sit cooped up inside the theatre is harder. Most of the acts scream summer. The first is a combined concert, light show, and video called Magic Carpet Ride. It’s an ode to the groovy music in the summer of 1967 in San Francisco from The Doors, The Byrds, and The Mamas and the Papas. Tie-dye t-shirts will be out in force on Tuesday, June 17th. Tickets range between $23 and $25.

Celebrate Independence Day with the 34th Infantry Division Red Bull Band from the Minnesota National Guard. They’ll send up a brassy salute to service on July 1st, filled with patriotic music the group uses to entertain military crowds at home and abroad.

It’s back to breezy oldies on July 15th with The Lovin’ Spoonful bringing their mix of folk, rock n’ roll, and pop to the Paramount. You’ll believe in magic after hearing a litany of top ten hits like “Daydream” and “Summer in the City.”
They’ll double-dip on the soothing sounds of Golden State pop with a concert on Saturday, July 19th. California Dreamin’ – The Songs of Laurel Canyon. Named after a neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills, the show includes Buffalo Springfield, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and more.

We go across the pond in late July with an Abba tribute band. There are two shows on the 24th to catch huge hits like “Dancing Queen” and “Fernando.”

On Thursday, August 7th, the kids will once again prove they are alright. Class is in session for School of Rock presented by the Wirth Center. Sixth through 12th graders will work in teams as part of a two-week camp, where they are mentored by local professionals. As a grand finale, they’ll put their bands to the test in a concert that plays a variety of hits from the 70s to the early 2000s.

Lastly, the Killer Vees will make a pass at “Cracklin’ Rosie” and “Sweet Caroline” in the Neil Diamond-themed show “I Am…He Said.” Tommy Vee promises an upbeat show that goes beyond the typical tribute acts. “This is a celebration of an amazing musical icon, one we all love and respect. We have been fans since we were in grade school and first learning our respective instruments, and played many of these tunes over the years in various bands. We have recruited an incredible group of singers and players and have gone back to the original records.”

One final thing to be on the lookout for is three art exhibits. From April 30th to May 30th, the Boys and Girls Club of Central Minnesota will have its spring showcase on display in the lobby. Self-taught artist Tammy Rice will take over Gallery St. Germain in May with her exhibit “Rural Roots + Slow Style Art.” The works are made from discarded materials like bicycle tires and tractor parts.

St. Cloud State University graphic design students will be showing off posters as part of their “Design in Action: Manifestos and Mindful Messages” exhibit in Gallery C. Each poster will include an augmented reality component that enhances the overall impact, which can be accessed through Adobe Audition.
