(KNSI) – A sophomore on the Storm N’ Sabres junior varsity lacrosse team was severely injured at practice Wednesday, and is still hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage.

Blake Sundby was guarding another player with his body turned when the lacrosse ball caught him flush in the back of the head. Even with a helmet on, the strike caused him to buckle and pass out. Sundby was taken to CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital where he suffered a seizure and then was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The family is providing updates on Blake’s condition through the website CaringBridge. His mother says Blake is heavily sedated and intubated to relieve pressure on his brain and allow it to heal. A pump is helping pull fluid from the skull, and an EEG and MRIs monitor brain activity.

She writes that under the best-case scenario, Blake will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for another two to three weeks at least. Unfortunately, at this time, it is too early to know the final outcome for Blake. There are opportunities to donate to support him and his family financially through CaringBridge or GoFundMe.

For those unable to give, a prayer or a positive word is more than enough. The Sartell Youth Hockey Association writes on Facebook, “We ask you to please keep Blake Sundby and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

“Blake, one of our own, is facing a difficult time right now, and as a hockey community, we believe in the power of support, strength, and standing together—on and off the ice.

“Let’s lift up the Sundby family with love, hope, and encouragement.”
