(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is holding the second Free Park Day of the year on Saturday, April 26th.
On a free park day, vehicle permit fees are waived for all 73 state parks and recreation areas across the state. The goal is to encourage people to spend time together in nature. According to the DNR website, vehicle permits are also not needed for those wishing to stay overnight on a free park day. Campers who want to stay an extra night must get a vehicle permit. Fees for premium activities such as special tours or equipment rentals may apply.
The DNR says the program allows people to check out everything the state parks have to offer in each of the four seasons. The agency also prides itself on the statistic showing most people in the state live within 30 miles of a state park. Visitors can use the DNR’s ParkFinder tool, available by clicking here, to find the closest park.
“Spring is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy everything Minnesota state parks and recreation areas have to offer,” said Ann Pierce, director of the DNR Parks and Trails Division. “It’s the perfect season to shake off winter, spend time with loved ones, and soak in the beauty of nature waking up from winter dormancy – whether it’s spotting wildflowers, hearing the songs of returning birds, or seeing the trees begin to leaf out.”
The next Free Park Day is June 20th.
