(KNSI) – A ROCORI High School graduate is making the most of her opportunity to play professional volleyball in the United States.
Eleanor Holthaus saw success as a Spartan before being recruited to Iowa State. With the Cyclones, she was the first player in program history to be named to the All-Big 12 Team four times. Holthaus went to Puerto Rico and then toured Europe in her first three seasons as a pro. Earlier this year, she got the call to join the Grand Rapids Rise of the relatively new Pro Volleyball Federation.
The Rise announced Holthaus was added to their practice squad on April 1st and she quickly found playing time on the court. Holthaus has gotten into five matches now and ranks as one of the squad’s top offensive weapons already. This past Saturday, the Rise took down the Indy Ignite in four sets, relying heavily on Holthaus on the attack.
She led the team taking 44 swings and securing 18 kills. Holthaus was blocked just three times and had no unforced errors, resulting in a 34.1% attack efficiency rating, best on the Rise. She added 13 digs defensively in her role as an outside/opposite hitter.
Holthaus’ addition to Grand Rapids has helped spark the team. They are currently 11-14 and in fifth place out of eight squads. The Rise have won more points than they’ve given up throughout the year, even with the below-.500 record. They were a piece away from taking the next step and are now beginning to realize that potential.
The top four teams make the PVF Championship. Grand Rapids is currently a game and a half back of Indianapolis in the chase for the playoffs.
