(KNSI) – The St. Cloud City Council is looking at the expansion of a park that could help save the pollinator population.
The goal is to create a habitat covering nearly four acres around two stormwater ponds in the largely undeveloped Deer Pond Park, about a mile east of Tech High School.
According to the University of Minnesota Extension Office, pollinators, such as bees, ants, flies, beetles, and birds, help plants grow by carrying pollen from one plant to another. This process helps fertilize plants and allows them to make fruit or seeds. The U of M says pollinator health is critical to the diversity of life worldwide.
The $19,000 project will be covered by a 10% cash match from the city and grant funds. The match would come from the parks and stormwater departments. City officials say the project aligns with the 2017 park and recreation master plan.
Monday’s city council meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. inside city hall.
