(KNSI) — A potential loss in state aid has the Minnesota State System bracing for potential tuition hikes this summer.

The announcement of a possible tuition increase of 3.5% to 9% would be the largest in nearly 12 years. A February report showed Minnesota State colleges and universities had estimated an average state funding increase of 7% across the system. The governor’s recommended budget included no increases for higher education.

Schools like St. Cloud Technical and Community College and St. Cloud State University rely on state support and tuition to cover their operating costs. SCTCC officials tell KNSI News they haven’t decided on tuition increases and are consulting with their student government, which is involved in all tuition and fee changes. A message left for SCSU about any possible changes wasn’t returned.

Minnesota State’s trustees set tuition at their meeting in June.

According to Minnesota State, the cost of attending a state college in the 2024-2025 school year was around $6,200, while attending a university cost about $10,000. There are around 270,000 MState students.
