(KNSI) – St. Cloud is recruiting an army to help protect local waters during the Earth Day Adopt-a-Drain Competition.
Between now and April 30th, communities across the county will vie to see who will take care of the most storm drains. City officials say adopting a location will reduce water pollution, one drain at a time. The city has around 8,100 storm drains, with the vast majority needing a caretaker.
Everyone taking part will receive a free reusable adopt-a-drain string backpack.
In St. Cloud, most stormwater runoff is sent to the Mississippi River, Sauk River, or wetlands. Some runoff goes through treatment systems like stormwater ponds and rain gardens.
