(KNSI) – Several area wastewater treatment plants are being honored for having outstanding operations.
The recognition comes from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, which has reviewed 676 facilities in the past year and awarded 236 of them. Each plant is evaluated using criteria listed in the Clean Water Act, which was passed in the early 1970s.
Four plants in Benton County, including Foley, Gilman, Rice, and Sauk Rapids, received the nod. Sherburne facilities in Becker, Big Lake, and Clear Lake also made the cut. Princeton had two: the traditional wastewater treatment plant and one dedicated to a mobile home park.
In Stearns County, locations range from St. Cloud and the Bel Clare Estates to Sauk Centre’s municipal site. The most are in Cold Spring, which boasts three. Two service large commercial factories, one for Cold Spring Granite Company’s main campus and the other at Pilgrims. The last is for the city facility. Some remaining facilities selected by the MPCA include Brooten, the Order of Saint Benedict in Collegeville, Freeport, and Watkins.
