(KNSI) – A central Minnesota school district is among those getting help with an additional tool to catch reckless drivers who don’t halt when the bus stop arm is extended.

Foley Public School is one of 18 receiving a portion of the $1.3 million doled out by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. The fund will equip 15 buses with stop arm cameras.

According to the OTS, the program has helped issue 2,105 citations to dangerous drivers in 2024. Drivers who violate the law face a $500 fine and other criminal charges.

On undivided roads, drivers in both directions must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus when the stop arm is extended. Traffic in the opposite direction on a divided road with a separating median is not required to stop.

The OTS has awarded more than $15 million in grants to buy school bus stop arm cameras, enough to equip 8,000 school buses. In the past, funds have helped equip buses for Albany, Becker, Holdingford and St. Cloud. The Stop Arm Camera Grant program started in 2022.
