(KNSI) — Drivers on Interstate 94 should prepare for roadwork and possible delays on Interstate 94 between Albertville and Monticello, as the second year of the three-year I-94 Gap Project kicks off on Tuesday.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation says this year crews will expand westbound 94 to three lanes from Wright County Road 37 in Albertville to west of Highway 25 in Monticello. MnDOT will reconstruct the road, replace and repair underground drainage systems, reconstruct the westbound bridge over County Road 19 in Albertville, install noise walls in Monticello and widen the westbound bridge over County Road 75 in Monticello.
Drivers can expect intermittent overnight single-lane closures in both directions while crews set up the work zone and install barriers. I-94 will remain two lanes in each direction, but all traffic will shift to the eastbound side while westbound construction is underway. There will be lane shifts, narrow shoulders and concrete barriers between directions to watch for. Information will be updated via electronic signs regarding closures and changes to local road access. Speed limits will also be decreased throughout the work zone.
To avoid getting stuck in the congestion, MnDOT says to use an alternate route or travel during off-peak hours.
The work will finish for the season in November and 94 will go back to two lanes in each direction.
Next year, crews will come back and expand the eastbound side, shifting traffic over to the newly completed westbound lanes.
