(KNSI) – Students from four area colleges will hold a health screening event for people 50 and older on the 17th at the Whitney Senior Center in St. Cloud.

Program Coordinator Kylie Weller notes there will be a comprehensive range of services provided thanks to the variety of students involved. “It is College of St. Ben’s and St. John’s [University] nursing students. It is the exercise science students from St. John’s and St. Ben’s and then for SCSU, it’s the nursing students, and from the Tech College, it is the dental hygiene students.”

They will be checking for high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke risk, poor balance, and signs of depression, among many other conditions. Weller says the event is great practice for the students while also being a positive for the community.

Weller says SCTCC’s dental hygiene students have helped catch cancer early, potentially saving lives, at the event in the past. “The dental hygiene students offer an overall look, [a] deeper dive into the mouth, and they have actually identified some people to go to their dentist to get a second opinion on an oral cancer screening that tested positive.”

The health and screening fair is a springtime tradition. This year’s event will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon. For more information, call 320-255-7245.
