(KNSI) — The City of St. Cloud is reminding residents regarding the ordinanace requiring property owners to clear public sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall event.

The sidewalks on all sides of an owner’s property must be cleared of snow and ice the full width and down to the bare pavement. City officials say sidewalks can be treated with salt, sand, or a mixture if needed. For those living on a corner, curb cuts and crosswalks to the street gutter must be cleaned up for handicap accessibility. Snow must be piled into a yard or boulevard. Shoveling snow back into the street, an alleyway, or sidewalk is illegal.

Failure to comply may result in snow and ice removal by City staff. Property owners are billed for the service; unpaid bills will be added to property tax statements. Administrative fines are $250 each.
