(KNSI) — Registration for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ I Can! programs is now open.
The experiences are designed for families to try any of the activities—or all of them—for the first time. Participants get hands on instruction from experienced guides, and the needed gear is also provided. Some of the classes have a small fee attached, but others are free.
I Can Camp! offers one or two night programs to learn how to camp. It offers a variety of trip formats to meet all interests and needs, including a backpacking program. Campers will learn hands on how to set up, build a fire, and cook. There is a fee for this one. Also, B.Y.O.S. – bring your own sleeping bag. I Can Paddle! gets participants out on the water on some of the state’s most beautiful lakes and rivers. The programs are designed especially for first-time paddlers; no experience is necessary. There will be small group sizes, and all equipment is provided. Learn more and sign up here.
I Can Mountain Bike! takes the adventure off road, showing bikers shifting, braking, body position, basic safety, and trail etiquette. All programs are held at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area and are about two and a half hours long. As long as someone knows how to ride a bike, they’re good to go. Fees range from $20 for kids ages ten to 18 to $35 for adults. Learn more and register here.
I Can Fish! sends first time anglers to one of several of the state’s 11,000 lakes to teach casting, fish identification and more. Programs last roughly two and a half hours and all equipment is provided. The cost is $7 for adults, children under 12 are free with a registered adult, and preregistration is provided. Wannabe archers can aim for fun with Archery in the Parks. Certified instructors will teach how to shoot a bow and arrow, and equipment is provided. The class is for those ages eight and up. The program is free, but a state park sticker or one-day vehicle pass is required. Learn more here.
