(KNSI) – Two St. Cloud Businesses want to upgrade their façades and are looking to tap a city redevelopment fund to help.

Fitzharris Ski, Bike and Outdoor, 105 7th Avenue South, is asking for $9,000 from the Downtown Exterior Improvement Grant program. It would cover half of the proposed $18,000 for a new awning to replace the old one, which the company says is “failing.”

The Central Minnesota Community Foundation, 101 7th Avenue South, is seeking $2,812 to pay for half of a $5,624 project that involves refreshing the existing awnings by cleaning and refurbishing their frames while replacing the old, worn-out valances. The new valances will be made from durable, weather-resistant canvas and feature branded graphics representing the business. Additionally, six non-functional window awnings will be removed. The company says the improvements will enhance the downtown’s streetscape.

According to the city’s website, the program incentivizes external, visible investment in downtown properties. The program provides a 50% matching grant for actual design and construction costs up to $10,000 per property on a pay-for-performance basis.

Both projects have been given staff support. The redevelopment plans will be in front of the Economic Development Authority on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. inside city hall.
