(KNSI) – A former St. Joseph mayor is now the head of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
Richard Carlbom was nominated as chair at a convention this weekend to replace Ken Martin, who moved into the same role at the national level earlier this year. Carlbom’s political career started 20 years ago as a field organizer and he swiftly rose through the ranks. Most recently, he held the position of deputy chief of staff for Governor Tim Walz.
Carlbom is promising immediate action by the party to regain the trifecta in state government that was lost in the 2024 election. “Minnesotans are fed up with Donald Trump and Elon Musk, and we are going to help them get involved right now, not two years from now. This is our chance to grow our party and help Minnesotans join the fight for a better future. Democrats across the country have looked to the Minnesota DFL as a model for how to win and improve people’s lives, and we are going to build on those successes together.”
Carlbom vows to support organizers now as they build community outreach efforts, rather than waiting until 2026. He also wants a “war room” that will rapidly respond to Republican gaffes and defend the DFL from GOP accusations.
