(KNSI) – Construction plans for new facilities at Mayhew Creek Park in Sauk Rapids cleared another hurdle at Monday’s city council meeting.

Phase II of the project, which covers multipurpose athletic facilities for sports like football, lacrosse, and soccer, was approved as part of the consent agenda. If it clears the Sauk Rapids-Rice School Board, final designs will begin with the hope of breaking ground yet this year.

Phase I is spearheaded by the city and the Sauk Rapids Youth Baseball Association. Four Little League diamonds and nearby parking lots make up that portion of the work. City engineer Scott Hedlund expects crews to be back at it soon. “That was on winter suspension, here. That should be starting up within a month, I would think.”

The school district will also be building a new early childhood learning center to replace Hillside. That makes up Phase III. It represents an investment of millions of dollars into the park just north of Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.
