(KNSI) – Minnesota will make workers head back to the office after a major change of course on its work-from-home policy.
On Tuesday, Governor Tim Walz announced the new telework policy for state employees. It requires most state agency employees to work in person for at least half of their scheduled workdays starting on June 1st. The policy change exempts employees who live more than 75 miles from work.
“This approach balances the flexibility of telework with the workplace advantages of being in office,” said Governor Walz. “Having more state employees in the office means that collaboration can happen more quickly and state agencies can build strong organizational cultures more easily.”
The state says around 60% of state employees already work in-person and did so throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Walz hopes the change supports the economic vitality of office districts like downtown Saint Paul, bringing foot traffic back to businesses and public spaces. Walz stated that many major Minnesota employers are also now requiring in-person workdays.
