(KNSI) – The Xcel Energy Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant reactor is offline after a control valve issue caused it to shut down.
In a statement, company officials explained that the system automatically took the reactor offline, safely shutting it down as it is designed, and the team is taking steps to bring the plant back to full operations. They believe everything should be back to normal by the end of the week and don’t expect any service interruptions due to the shutdown.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says there was no threat to public health and safety or the health and safety of the workers.
In January, the commission approved an extension for the facility to operate through 2050.
