(KNSI) – The Minnesota Frost had to go outside the State of Hockey to set the all-time American women’s professional hockey attendance record Sunday night.
As part of the PWHL Takeover Tour, the league’s defending champions skated in Detroit at Little Caesar’s Arena, home of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. It was a loss for the Frost against the New York Sirens, but a huge win for the fledgling professional organization. Officials counted 14,288 fans in the stands to see the 4-1 final.
Detroit is one of several markets viewed as a potential expansion market for the PWHL, whose average attendance has grown to about 7,000 per game. Special attractions have proven successful. Better than 21,000 saw a game between the Montreal and Toronto franchises last year at the Canadiens’ Bell Centre.
Sunday’s result is not the American record for a women’s hockey game. That mark is still held by Wisconsin and St. Cloud State for a WCHA contest back in 2017 in front of a sold-out Kohl Center. SCSU also had a very memorable venue in 2018 for Hockey Day Minnesota when it skated to a 2-1 victory over Minnesota-Duluth outdoors at Lake George.
