(KNSI) – Law enforcement agencies at the local, county, and state levels are cracking down on drunk driving for the St. Patrick’s holiday.

The extra enforcement runs through Monday, the 17th, and is coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety. Through early March, 51 people have died on Minnesota roads, with seven of those linked to alcohol use.

St. Patrick’s Day and the weekend before is one of the heaviest drinking days on the calendar. In 2024, there were 438 DWI arrests over St. Patrick’s Day weekend. That was up from the year prior. From 2019-2024, ten people died related to DWIs.

Drivers are encouraged to arrange for a sober drive home before they go out, whether that is through family and friends or a third-party ridesharing platform like Uber or Lyft. This weekend, a light dusting of snow is expected on Saturday, adding an added element of danger on the roads.
