(KNSI) – A local United States congressman feels the federal government’s proposed tariffs on farm products will help level the playing field for central Minnesota dairy farmers.
Republican Majority Whip Tom Emmer represents the area in Washington, D.C. and told KNSI that Donald Trump is the only one fighting for farmers, citing Canada’s 150% to 200% tariffs on milk from Minnesota. “They literally deny our dairy producers any access to the Canadian market. But they think they deserve full and fair access to our market.”
He says the tariffs are about fairness, and the president uses them as part of larger negotiations. “Donald Trump wants to see reciprocity. It’s common sense. We will treat you as you treat us.”
He believes a fair deal will be struck that will benefit all Americans, whether it’s with Canada, Mexico or the European Union. “It’s going to be a bit of a ride, but I’m very confident when we come out the other side, this will be the best for the greatest producers, whether it’s ag or manufacturing industry in the US, it’ll be much better for our people because they will finally get treated fairly as they try to access foreign markets.”
Stearns County leads the state in milk production and is ranked 21st nationally with over 500 dairy farms.
