(KNSI) – A woman is dead after losing control of her car on an icy road in Benton County.
According to the sheriff’s office, around 3:50 on Wednesday afternoon, first responders were called to the scene of a broadside accident on Ronnerby Road Southeast, about a half mile south of Duelm.
Investigators say Amanda Nieman was headed north on the road when she hit a slick patch of roadway caused by blowing snow and ice due to the open terrain and gusting winds. The Milaca woman’s 2008 Chevy Cobalt lost traction and began sliding on the roadway just as she met a 2016 Buick Enclave. The 31-year-old became trapped in the wreckage with serious injuries and had to be extracted. Once removed from the car, paramedics began life-saving efforts, but it was no use. Nieman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 43-year-old Sauk Rapids woman driving the Enclave and her eight-year-old passenger were taken to CentraCare-St. Cloud Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at this scene by the Minnesota State Patrol, Foley Fire Department, Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office, North Memorial Ambulance, and Benton County Public Works.
