(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the state patrol say for those in certain areas planning on heading out today, wait if you can.

A winter weather advisory runs from Yellow Medicine County northeast through Pine County and does touch the KNSI listening area as Sherburne and Wright counties are included. Though what we are experiencing is not as severe as what’s happening to the south of us, travel may be difficult at times. The snow will taper off but be blown around due to 40 mile an hour winds. The advisory is in effect until noon.

Almost the entire bottom three tiers of counties are under a blizzard warning for winds gusting to around 45 miles an hour, causing patchy blowing snow and whiteout conditions, which make driving nearly impossible. A no travel advisory went out at 1:30 Wednesday morning that covered roads even in the Twin Cities. Interstate 90 is closed from Luverne to just east of Blue Earth. Several other highways in that area are also shut down. Heavy snow fell all night and will continue to fall along and east of a line from Mankato through Minneapolis and Rush City. Areas around Fairmont could see a foot of snow. The blizzard warning will expire at 3:00 Wednesday afternoon, but roads may remain slick and impassable until crews can get out and run cleanup.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 3:00 this afternoon from Redwood County through the Twin Cities and into Wisconsin. Some areas there will see up to 10″ of snow by the time everything is said and done. Winds around 40 miles an hour will also create whiteout conditions and make for difficult driving. Roads around the Twin Cities are so bad, Metro Transit has suspended bus service until further notice.

The National Weather Service says this is the strongest storm we have experienced this snow season.
