(KNSI) – A St. Cloud State University professor has been named Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.

J. Scott Baker is an associate professor of secondary education. He was chosen for his commitment to student learning and ability to help shape the next generation of teachers. Baker believes a professor’s focus must always be on the classroom. “Any successful educator will tell you it is always about the students, and this is exactly how I feel with this recognition. I am grateful for the students, my secondary education colleagues and the excellent work we do at SCSU to elevate our students.”

The interim dean of the College of Education and Learning Design, Melissa Hanzsek-Brill, commended Baker for incorporating hard topics into the curriculum. “His willingness to tackle challenging and controversial topics in a way that invites engagement and learning in a supportive environment is truly commendable.”

Two other SCSU employees were recognized. Director of Graduate Student Services Melanie Guentzel was selected for a 2025 Outstanding Service Faculty award. Assistant Professor of Environmental and Technological Studies Jungwon Ahn was named a 2025 Outstanding Educator.

St. Cloud Technical and Community College Speech Communication Instructor Kelly Crue was also picked as a 2025 Outstanding Educator. All four are invited to a luncheon on April 16th.
