(KNSI) – A Minnesota man is in custody after trying to fly to Somalia to join ISIS.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa Kirkpatrick, Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan got on the radar of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he attempted to buy a ticket to the east African nation on two occasions in December 2024. Both failed. Hassan told officials he was visiting family even though he has no relatives in the country. He brought his birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and high school diploma with him to the airport, which raised red flags.
The FBI combed through Hassan’s social media accounts and found several posts praising ISIS, including the man who rammed a vehicle into a crowd on New Year’s Day in New Orleans. Another video had him proudly displaying an ISIS flag in his vehicle.
Hassan was arrested on Thursday. The criminal complaint charges him with one count of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. He will have a formal detention hearing on Wednesday, March 5th.
