(KNSI) – A suspected drunk driver crashed into a cemetery in Sauk Centre Township on Sunday night.
The accident happened just after 11:30 at the intersection of County Road 17 and County Road 185. A Sauk Centre police officer and Minnesota State trooper responded, finding a 2014 Chevy Silverado had been gone through a chain link fence around the perimeter and clipped several grave markers.
An investigation determined that the driver had blown past a stop sign, crossed the t-intersection at a high speed, and crashed. Steven Sawatzky of Grand Forks, North Dakota suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Sawatzky was then arrested. He was booked into the Stearns County Jail on 4th degree driving while intoxicated. A press release from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says alcohol was a definitive factor in the accident.
