(KNSI) – Minnesota is enacting bag limits for the first time on a handful of fish once considered garbage.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says starting March 1st, anglers will see possesion rules set for the American eel, yellow bass whitefish, cisco, and burbot. Officials say its to protect the species and ensure sustainable populations.
Due to their rarity in Minnesota, the American eel will be fully protected with no harvest allowed. Meanwhile, whitefish, cisco, and burbot, once considered rough fish with no limits, will now be regulated to prevent over-exploitation.
Additionally, the daily limit for yellow bass will be set at 30, combining both yellow and white bass to prevent confusion between the two species. Special regulations may allow higher bag limits in areas where yellow bass populations are growing rapidly.
Anglers are reminded to check the 2025 fishing regulations booklet for these and other updates this season.
