(KNSI) — The St. Cloud City Council has given a thumbs up to hiring a firm to manage the building of a new fire station and training center.
Fire Chief and Interim City Administrator Matt Love told KNSI News one of the things that stood out about Minneapolis based ICS Consulting is their experience building modern fire stations. “There’s a lot of trends in fire stations. A lot of them aim towards the health and safety of firefighters. So, when firefighters come back from a fire and, they’re covered in all those carcinogens, how do they get rid of those cancer causing agents before they go into the living quarters and potentially take it home to their family? This organization seemed to really understand that.”
Operations will be run out of the ICS office in Sauk Rapids. They will make sure the project is completed in a fiscally responsible way and that the building has the innovations the department is looking for.
Love explained this was just the beginning phase. “The next step is the architectural firm, and then they will come to start work together, to start building the design and so forth.”
This year will be spent finalizing details. Next year will be spent finding a lender for the project, followed by groundbreaking. In the fall of 2027, the new station should be up and running at full strength. The location is at 33rd Street South and County Road 74 near the new Tech High School.
The $43.5 million facility will be paid for by a new property tax, which voters overwhelmingly approved in November.
