(KNSI) – A St. Cloud Cathedral player has been nominated for the 41st annual Mr. Hockey Award.
It is just the second time ever that a Crusader has been up for the state’s top individual prize in high school hockey. Ten finalists were announced Friday by the Minnesota All Sports Alliance. Among the group was Cathedral forward John Hirschfeld.
The senior is hoping to lead the squad to back-to-back state championships before moving on to the University of Vermont in Hockey East as a collegiate player. Hirschfeld has been outstanding in the 2024-25 season, tallying 24 goals and 48 assists in 26 games. He ramped up the pace Saturday afternoon in the section semifinal against Little Falls, notching a goal and four assists in the 10-3 victory over the Flyers.
Cathedral’s next game is Wednesday against the Monticello Moose for a place at the Xcel Energy Center and the state hockey tournament. It will be a stern test as Monticello is 23-3-1 on the season.
Hirschfeld will find out if he is Mr. Hockey at a banquet scheduled for March 9th at the St. Paul RiverCentre.
