(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued an extreme cold warning for the area this morning until 10:00, and another one for overnight tonight.

Forecasters say an arctic airmass has settled in over the region, blanketing us under a prolonged cold snap. Highs today will be in the single digits below zero with windchills in the 20s and 30s below zero are not out of the question today.

The coldest night of the week will be overnight Monday night into Tuesday as low temperatures plummet into the upper 20s to near 30 below zero. Northwest winds will be between five and ten miles an hour, but with air that cold, any breath of wind is enough to drive wind chills down into the -40 to -45 below range. Portions of western Minnesota could see -50.

Each day this week, Mother Nature will slowly release her icy grip. Friday, a warming trend begins and we could be well into the 30s by Sunday.
