(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Revenue is reminding residents that there are over 200 sites across the state that will help with filing tax returns.

The primary free options are the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program and one offered through AARP. VITA is not open to anyone. You have to meet one of the following conditions: Be 60 years or older, have a disability, speak limited or no English, or have an income of less than $67,000. There are no such strings for the AARP Tax-Aide program, but it tends to skew older.

VITA is being offered at the St. Cloud Salvation Army and St. Cloud Technical and Community College. The AARP program will be handled locally at the Whitney Senior Center and Sartell Community Center. Tri-CAP will also have a location open in Waite Park.

Anyone thinking of using VITA or AARP Tax-Aide is encouraged to set up an appointment by phone in advance. The Minnesota Department of Revenue number is 651-297-3724. Space tends to be limited as the deadline to file gets closer. When coming to the appointment, make sure to have your driver’s license or government ID and all tax-related documents, such as a W-2.

All sites are staffed by certified volunteers.
