(KNSI) – Minnesota House Republicans have fired off a letter to the Minnesota State High School League after the organization said it would not abide by President Donald Trump’s Executive Order.
The order, titled Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports, was issued on February 5th and says athletes at the high school and college level must compete with the team that matches their gender assigned at birth, not their current gender identity. The MSHSL stated it would continue to allow trans athletes to compete with the team matching their gender identity in defiance of the order.
The representatives are expressing concern about the lack of compliance with a federal mandate. The MSHSL says their policies are dictated by state law, not at the federal level.
Republicans say they would like to open a constructive dialogue with Executive Director Erich Martens to make sure the MSHSL’s policies “align with the values of Minnesotans who support fairness and competitive integrity in high school athletics.”
