(KNSI) – An eighth grader at St. John’s Prep is the outstanding orthographer of central Minnesota.

Emmaline Bushman nailed the word ‘honorarium’ to top the regional spelling bee on Tuesday. The competition was comprised of 40 students from across the area in fifth through eighth grades. Bushman had to win a school contest last month to qualify. She now has a guaranteed spot in the upcoming National Spelling Bee.

The school says Bushman is already hard at work drilling for the Washington, D.C. area tournament running from May 27th to the 29th. Language arts teacher Jeff Kirchoff praises Bushman’s dedication. “Emmaline is one of the most determined individuals I know. Her preparation for every activity she pursues – whether the Spelling Bee, Knowledge Bowl, or a class assignment – is second to none. More importantly, though, she remains a genuinely humble individual who is always quick to thank people for their time and energy.”

Another language arts teacher, Carlee Biechler, talked about Bushman’s congeniality, noting she is the first to congratulate or encourage other contestants. Biechler exclaims, “We are so proud of her and cannot wait to watch her represent Saint John’s Prep at the National Spelling Bee. Congratulations and good luck, Emmaline!”

2025 is the 100th year of the National Spelling Bee, meaning Bushman will be an ambassador for central Minnesota during a milestone competition.
