(KNSI) – Three suspects have been charged in connection to a double shooting in St. Cloud in what appears to be a robbery gone wrong that left one teenager dead and another fighting for his life.
A warrant has been issued for Bernard Bowens (pictured on top below) on charges of second-degree murder and third-degree murder. Earlier this week, Quinton McNeal (pictured in the middle) and Olivia Williams were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting theft of a firearm and aiding and abetting first-degree robbery. Williams is facing an additional charge of aiding an offender. All three suspects are 19-years-old.
According to the criminal complaint, around 3:00 on Sunday morning, police were called to an apartment in the 200 block of 2nd Street Northeast for the sound of gunshots. When police arrived, they found 17-year-old Lyson Davis dead from a gunshot wound to the chest and a 19-year-old man from St. Joseph suffering from two shots to the chest. The 19-year-old was rushed to CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition.
Investigators watched surveillance video that showed the two men standing inside an apartment building when Bowens came in and pulled a wad of cash out of his coat pocket before putting it back. About five minutes later, the three are seen on video struggling over a gun. Then Bowens ended up with the gun and ran down the hallway.
About a minute after the scuffle, McNeal and two other men walked into the building. Davis is then seen running on the second floor with a gun when Bowens appears to ambush Davis as he is coming down the stairs. The two each drew their guns, and Bowens fired several rounds at Davis and ran. The other victim ran after the gunman when he was shot by someone else. The shooter, Bowens, McNeal and another man, then fled the scene.
Court papers say McNeal’s girlfriend, identified as Williams, was detained following a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. Cell phone data shows before the shooting, she was near her home, which is within a block of the scene. After the shooting, she was at an apartment complex on 12th Avenue Southeast, close to where the mother of the unnamed suspect lives. Williams then drove the suspect to Minnetonka, where he lives with the mother of his child.
Police arrested Williams for probable cause Tuesday afternoon after investigators said they saw her on surveillance camera at the crime scene about 20 minutes before shots were fired, propping a door open. The suspect’s jacket was also in her car. In a recorded statement, she said McNeal told her he was going to make a “sale,” which she believed may have involved either a gun or drugs, and McNeal told her to prop the door open. She felt like McNeal and the two other men were going to try and get something without paying for it, and they were wearing ski masks.
McNeal also gave police a statement saying the group he was with had guns but believed Bowens did not and said he was there for protection. McNeal explained he walked into the apartment building, and other people started fighting; then he heard a gunshot and took off running to avoid getting hit. Afterward, McNeal told investigators his girlfriend drove him and Bowens to a home in Minnetonka, where they dropped him off. He also said Bowens had the black and gold gun with him, which he believed had been stolen from the 19-year-old victim.
Prosecutors say the case remains under investigation, and more arrests and charges could be coming.
