(KNSI) — Officials with St. Cloud Area School District 742’s Local Education Arts Foundation say its Adopt a Classroom program achieved remarkable success.

This year, thanks to a record-breaking $54,000 in community donations, LEAF 742 awarded 216 grants.

Launched at the beginning of the school year, the program connects businesses, individuals, parents, grandparents, and groups with classrooms in need of supplies the district’s budget can’t cover. Supporters make a tax deductible $250 donation to adopt a classroom to help buy what is needed.

Supplies range from everyday basics like markers, pencils, and notebooks, and even clean clothes for elementary students, to specialized items like sheet music, science kits, dry ice, and snake food. Many teachers dip into their own pockets to supply their classrooms. Adopt a Classroom helps alleviate that.

While the success is significant, 69 classrooms unfortunately didn’t receive funding this year. The teachers applied but were not randomly selected to be part of the program. A donation of $17,250 would allow LEAF 742 to fund all of the remaining teacher requests.
