(KNSI) – A St. Cloud State University team placed first at the Minnesota State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition last weekend.

Ten teams battled it out at Alexandria Technical and Community College on January 25th. CCDC teams were tasked with protecting a simulated small business network from a team of hackers. They had to balance security with ensuring the website was functional for hypothetical customers.

The business was set up to have 50 users who needed access to the network, which stretched across seven to ten servers. It was designed to allow users to tap into the internet, email, and an e-commerce site.

SCSU cybersecurity professor Dave Keller praised his team, “They were able to successfully apply what was learned in the classroom to a real-world scenario.” He added, “Their initiative to extend their learning beyond the classroom’s four walls reflects on the very best of what SCSU stands for.”

The SCSU squad was made up of captain Griffin Davies and team members Naima Mumin, Carl Jenson, Dustin Pollreis, Liam Browning, Kenneth Quinn, Colin Robertson, and Ryan Stearns. A second alternate group was able to participate from SCSU but they were not a part of the final scoring.

St. Cloud State advances to the regional competition in March at Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, Indiana.
