(KNSI) – A new ranking shows Minnesota is among the best states to spend your golden years.
A new WalletHub report shows the North Star State as the second best to retire in. The survey considered things like affordability, crime, quality of life and health care.
Minnesota excelled in medical care, coming in number one in the nation. The state has the most healthcare facilities per capita, the second-most nursing homes, and the third-most home healthcare aids per capita. Its geriatrics hospitals also rank as the fifth-best in the nation. Minnesota has the third-lowest percentage of seniors with a disability, the fourth-lowest percentage with poor mental health, and the fifth-highest percentage who are in good physical health. Additionally, Minnesota has the 10th-best elder abuse protections in the country.
When it comes to overall quality of life, the state also has the 15th-lowest violent crime rate and the fifth-highest percentage of people who do favors for their neighbors. Minnesota has the 10th-lowest share of residents ages 65+ who are in poverty and the fifth-lowest percentage who went hungry in the last 12 months. The state also ranked fifth in life expectancy, eighth in the ease in which seniors can find jobs to provide income late in life and 18th in annual cost of in-home service.
Minnesota was middle of the pack in property crime rate, adjusted cost of living and the percentage of the population 65 and older.
Florida finished ahead of Minnesota for the best states to retire in. Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota also made the top five. According to WalletHub, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Washington and New Mexico are the worst states to retire in. To see the full report, click here.
